Least Tern (Sternula antillarum), Glendale SRP Ponds (107th Ave and Camelback), Maricopa County

Three Least Terns were discovered at this site on the evening of 22 May 2009 by Melanie Herring.  Four were present the next day and they were photographed by Magill Weber and Tyler Loomis.

This species is nearly annual in mid May at two locations in the state, Willcox and Gilbert Water Ranch.  Away from these sites it is extremely rare.

2008 is proving to be a banner year for this species as a number of individuals have appeared at the two regular sites, as well as more unusual sites like this one.  However, this is a new site and it could continue to be attractive to this species in the future so it is worth keeping an eye on in May.  Appearance of the majority of these birds was associated with a strong low pressure system that brought strong southerly winds, low clouds and rain to the state for several days.
