Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), Arlington Valley, Maricopa County

This Broad-winged Hawk was discovered and photographed by Troy Corman on 27 April 2011.

Typically a casual spring migrant in Arizona, but records appear to be increasing with this spring being exceptional in the number of reports.

Smaller Buteo, with brown head, nape, back and upper wings with little contrasting pattern. Dense reddish-brown barring on breast with finer and more distinct barring on flanks. Broad white band can be seen from below on folded tail.
