Eurasian Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca crecca), Tempe Market Place, Maricopa County

This Eurasian Green-winged Teal was discovered by Magill Weber on 10 December 2011 and photographed by Pierre Deviche on 07 January 2012.

There are only three previous records for the state, but this is likely the same bird reported at this location for the past two winters.

Eurasian Green-winged Teal is considered a separate species by some authorities, but the AOU considers it a subspecies.  It resembles American Green-winged Teal and behaves similarly (see composite picture showing bird during courtship display in a small group of American Green-winged Teals) but it has no vertical white bar between breast and belly and instead has a bold white horizontal wing bar.  In addition, the light face lines seem more conspicuous than in Green-winged Teal, but this is subtle. Intergrades with American Green-winged Teal are also seen, but these usually have a trace of the vertical white breast bar.
