Red-throated Loon (Gavia stellata), Thompson Bay on Lake Havasu, Mohave County
This Red-throated Loon was photographed by David Vander Pluym on 11 January 2012. This is presumed to be the same
bird present around Lake Havasu since 30 November 2011,
although it has been infrequently reported since mid December
when it appears to have moved to a new area. It is
likely different than the bird reported here on 30
October 2011, since that bird did not stay long.
Prior to this year, there were 18 accepted records.
However, this species appears to be increasing and there
have been 1-2 records every year for the last several
years. There has been increased coverage of the
Lower Colorado River this year and several Red-throated
Loons, perhaps as many as 5 different individuals, have
been reported there this year.
First-winter bird in mostly juvenile plumage. Distinctly smaller and trimmer proportions than Common/Pacific Loons. Key characteristics noted in images include bill held at a slight uptilted angle, some pale speckles on the back and nape, uniform gray neck pattern extending onto lower neck, and darker patch on upper throat.
