Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata), Freestone Park, Maricopa County

This Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) was photographed by Lindsay Story on 14 November 0013

Because of its beauty, the Mandarin Duck is an exotic that attracts birders. Freestone Park is an easily accessible site in the Greater Phoenix AZ area.

Although the Mandarin is normally found in east Asia, it is prized by duck enthusiasts and is often found in captivity. S. England has a large percentage of the world's population due to introduction as an ornamental bird. In Arizona, Mandarins can sometimes be found along Oak Creek and other Verde Valley sites.

Males are generally unmistakable, females can be a challenege to differentiate from the similar Wood Duck.
