White-winged Scoter (Melanitta fusca), Lake Pleasant, Maricopa County

These six White-winged Scoters were photographed by Kurt Radamaker on 12 January 2014 and by Moe Bertrand on 13 January 2014.

Rare fall migrant and winter visitant, normally only seen singly. This represents a new high count for Arizona.

Heavy-bodied, large-billed ducks. Plumage dark overall with two white patches on the face and a large white wing patch.
