Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope), Arrowhead Ranch, Maricopa County

This Eurasian Wigeon was photographed by Jason Morgan on 28 December 2013

A likely returning bird first found in January 2013

Eurasian Wigeon is a rare winter visitor to Arizona, most regular on ponds and golf courses in the Phoenix area.

Hybrids between Eurasian and American Wigeon are frequent in Arizona and must be carefully separated from pure Eurasians. Features of a pure Eurasian Wigeon are  the pure gray sides of this bird which sharply contrast with the pinkish breast, the solid rufous head and the lack of a black line at the base of the bill.
