Greater Scaup (Aythya marila), Amado WTP , Pima County

This Greater Scaup was found by Tom Johnson, Marshall Iliff, and Tim Lenz on 28 April and photographed by Jeremy Medina on 04 May 2014.

Greater Scaup is a casual transient and winter visitor away from the Lower Colorado River where it is regular in good numbers in the winter.

This photo of two females provides a nice comparison of Greater and Lesser Scaup relaxed swimming posture. The Greater Scaup on the left shows a lower, more rounded head and larger bill than the Lesser Scaup on the right. It also shows a slight hint of whitish auriculars that usually indicates Great Scaup.
