Least Flycatcher (Empidonax minimus), Parker, La Paz County

This Least Flycatcher was found by Lauren Harter and photographed by David Vander Pluym on 04 May 2014

Casual visitor with 10 prior records (and one submitted); of these only two (plus the submitted one) are from spring. This date is early for spring reports in the west.

Empidonax flycatchers are a difficult group to identify. Helpful features that separate this bird from Dusky Flycatcher include the head and neck shape, short, wide bill with convex sides, high wing contrast (very wide, bright wing bars with the rest of the wing rather blackish), olive back contrasting with grayer head, white throat and vested look, and short wings and tail. Calling and the sonogram of the recording of the calls matched Least.
