Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus), Miller Canyon, Cochise County

This Short-tailed Hawk was found and photographed by Drew Sattler on 29 April 2014

Drew writes "I was hiking a trail above the Beatty House hummingbird observation area looking for the Spotted Owl roost spot. I took a wrong turn and decided to hike to the top of the saddle. When I got to the top I found this bird circling about forty yards away from me."

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and increasing in Arizona for the last several years and it has bred.

White underparts, including throat.  Black trailing edge to wing, grayish secondaries and white base to the outer primaries.
