Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus), Florida Canyon, Pima County

This Red-eyed Vireo was found by Laurens Halsey and Brian Johnson and photographed by Laurens on 28 June 2014

Casual but nearly annual in Arizona.

Red eye, striking head pattern with whitish supercilium bordered below by black eye-line & above by thin black line framing dark gray crown, white underparts including vent with little to no yellowish tinge, and lack of wing bars distinguish this vireo from all other species. Care must be taken to distinguish from Yellow-green Vireo, which should show more yellow on the underparts particularly the vent/undertail coverts. This appears to be a second year bird based on several retained brownish juvenile wing coverts (most noticeable in the first photo).
