Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin), private yard near Sonoita, AZ, Pima County

This Allen's Hummingbird was found and photographed by Katherine Cudney on 14 July 2014

Rare but regular fall migrant in SE Arizona. Few records elsewhere, but due to difficulties in identification probably overlooked

Good views or photographs are usually needed to identify Allen's from the very similar Rufous which can show green on the back. Along with the green back these photos show the narrow lance like tail feathers and very narrow pin like outer tail feathers which are significantly different from the broader notched tail feathers of a Rufous.
