Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Wheatfields Lake, Navajo Nation, Apache County

This Red-necked Grebe was found by Lauren Harter and photographed by Eric Hough on 31 August 2014

Casual in Arizona and apparently the first reported in Apache County. This is only the second August report for the state; most prior records are from late fall through early spring.

Key distinguishing characteristics that are visible here: this is a large grebe about the size of nearby Western Grebes but shorter-necked, with a dark body and dark cap contrasting with whitish cheek patch.
