Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica), Sweetwater Wetlands. Pima County

Purple Gallinule is a casual summer transient to Arizona. This adult bird was found at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson by Drew and Pam Pallette on 7/30/06. Serendipitously, a juvenile Purple Gallinule was found on the same pond at Sweetwater on 7/27/02. This species is on the AZ Bird Committee's Review List.
