White-collared Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola), Kino Springs, Santa Cruz County

On 25 June 2007 Bill Sutton discovered a White-collared Seedeater at the club house pond at Kino Springs, Santa Cruz County, AZ. Bill returned with Steve Sams who photographed the bird. The photo shows the bird to be a male of the western Mexico subspecies, different than the subspecies that occurs in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. (see Howell and Webb plate 62). The normal range of the west Mexican subspecies does not extend north of Sinaloa (see Howell and Webb page 702).
