Arizona Bird Committee
The Arizona Bird Committee (ABC) was organized in 1972 with the goals of improving the quality of state bird records and furthering knowledge of bird distribution in the state. The major functions of the ABC are to evaluate documentation of observations of birds that are very rare in the state, to publish reports on the results of those evaluations, to archive the documentation and to maintain and publish a checklist of Arizona birds. Reports come to the ABC from individuals who submit written documentation, images or sound recordings to the Committee. The ABC encourages all birders to submit details on their noteworthy Arizona observations. Noteworthy observations include sightings of any species that is on the ABC Review List or any birds whose occurrence is well outside of the known pattern for that species in the state. Reports may be submitted via an on-line form or via email or postal mail to the ABC Secretary; printable form. For less-rare species, sightings details are solicited by the Arizona Region editors of “North American Birds”, a quarterly journal of ornithological record published by the American Birding Association. “sketch details” list.
The ABC secretary maintains a web site within the Arizona Field Ornithologists’ (AZFO) web site, though the two groups are not officially associated. AZFO does not review or endorse Arizona bird records, but does maintain a Photo Documentation page on which photographs of rare birds may be posted. This page provides a locus for sharing information but does not play a role in the evaluation and archiving functions of the ABC. Because of this, photos of Review Species submitted to the AZFO photo editor should also be submitted to the ABC.
