Arizona County Bird Checklists
AZFO has an ongoing project to compile comprehensive, current, and accurate lists of the bird species found in all of Arizona’s 15 counties. These well researched lists can help birders and field ornithologists know the birds they may encounter in each county and if their observations are unusual. Moreover, they contribute to the natural history of each county, which can be useful to future researchers. So far, we have six lists, which are linked below. Not only are the species included, but the lists note whether the species have nested in the county and provide standardized abundance and seasonal codes. The names and order are in accordance with those of the American Ornithological Society. We will attempt to update the lists as needed.
The species on the lists are all on the Checklist of the Birds of Arizona, maintained by the Arizona Bird Committee. For most of the six counties with lists, articles describing the particular characteristics of the county, and the process entailed in finding and deciding whether species should be included in the checklist or not, can be found in Arizona Birds. The book, Birds of Phoenix and Maricopa County Arizona (Janet Witzeman and Troy Corman, 2017) includes an annotated list with bar graphs of the birds of Maricopa County. If you would like to help prepare the list for a county without one, contact AZFO at dougjenness@gmail.com.
